The Porsche 918 Spyder

The Porsche factory are currently testing the 918 Spyder and have decided to paint the latest car in the classic Martini livery to celebrate past racing glories. This may induce memories of the Porsche race cars that ran this sponsorship from 1973-1978.

The Porsche 918 Spyder will soon go into production, they are currently running tests and have already achieved a lap time of 7min 22sec at Nordschleife. That’s 6 seconds faster than the Carrera GT but 4 seconds slower than a 911 GT2 RS.

This two-seater, ultra-high-performance, mid-engined sports car with plug-in hybrid technology comes after “overwhelming response from the public and customers.”

A Porsche spokesman said “Production would be a limited series featuring the combination of supreme performance and efficient drive train concepts.”

This new Porsche would effectively replace the Carrera GT that had total unit sales of about 1,270 over four years. It is reported that the 918 can sprint to a top speed of over 203mph, 0-62mph in less than three seconds.

The 918 Spyder was first unveiled to the public at the Geneva Motor Show and later at the Auto Show in Beijing. The concept car was complete with a 500 horsepower V8 and an electric motor that should let you get about 78 miles per gallon, or a total of 16 miles of driving straight from the battery.

Porsche declined to estimate how many 918 Spyders might be made, or when they might appear. “The last time we built a car like this was the Carrera GT, and there were just over 1,000 of those.”
