This team works Rally car is a Morris 1800 Land Crab MK2 which was manufactured in 1968 and restored in 1991 and registered by the factory with the number plate SMO 233G. It was the first of the SMO series built for the London to Sydney Rally and is one of only five team cars that was used to survey the rally cars on the run. SMO 233G was assembled from a bare shell in the Competition Department at BLMC Abington and did not have the Roo bar fitted. The unofficial nickname ‘Land Crab’ came about as a journalist commented on how they corner sideways when viewed from a helicopter. The 1968 London to Sydney Marathon rules stated that the car had to be two wheel drive with a maximum height so that the cars would fit into the hold of the SS Chusan.
